Functional Genomics of the Heart
Our work has revealed remarkable parallels between zebrafish and human cardiac electrophysiology that we are exploring in several ongoing projects. We are particularly interested in the development of specialized structures in the heart including the conduction system, the individual chambers, and boundaries between them. We are primarily using the zebrafish as a model organism, which has a proven track record in the study of cardiac development. In order to expand the range of genetic investigation in this model, we have developed new techniques to explore cardiac physiology in the fish. Another major focus of the lab is the study of the early steps involved in cardiac valvulogenesis, which have proven challenging to study in more traditional models.
