Dr. Koyama is a physician-scientist whose research focuses on the genetic analysis of common, complex cardiovascular diseases using genomic and clinical data from millions of individuals. He received his MD from Kobe University and completed his residency and cardiovascular disease fellowship training at Kobe City General Hospital and Amagasaki General Medical Center in Japan. He earned his PhD from Kyoto University and subsequently pursued postdoctoral training at RIKEN and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard.
Over the course of his training, Dr. Koyama has developed extensive expertise in computational biomedical research, with a particular emphasis on large-scale genomic and clinical data to elucidate the genetic architecture and pathophysiology of human diseases. During this period, he has received several awards, including the Gill Award from the Cardiovascular Research Center at the University of Kentucky and a K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.
Dr. Koyama’s laboratory pursues two major objectives: (1) discovering and interpreting the genetic causes of human disease and (2) establishing genetic risk-prediction models to enable clinical translation. The overarching goal of his research program is to contribute to the realization of personalized medicine and, ultimately, to improve patient outcomes.
